Instant Syndicating Standards was created by Nick Vidal as part of his thesis. He was awarded a scholarship from CAPES to study at UFRGS, one of the top universities in Brazil. His project gained attention from the XMPP Standards Foundation and was funded by Google's Summer of Code Program in 2006. This helped to create the first prototype on top of Psi. In 2009, the Knight Foundation has donated a grant to build ISS support for Drupal.
